Are you interested in how ethical requirements and stakeholder values can be represented in the design of information systems? In this position, you will support a research project that develops and empirically evaluates a new modeling notation for data-intensive socio-technical systems.
You will gain insight into the full research process, from theory development through data collection to submission at an international journal and work closely with the project team. If you are interested, there is the option to write a thesis connected to the topic.
What to expect
You will work on a project at the intersection of conceptual modeling, Value-Based Engineering, and responsible system design.
- Research: You review and organize literature on conceptual modeling, Value-Based Engineering, and the ethical design of information systems, and maintain the reference database.
- Modeling: You model real socio-technical systems, both in the notation developed in the project and in established comparison notations such as Data-Flow Diagrams or BPMN.
- Visualization: You create and revise figures for publications and presentations.
- Organizational and administrative support: You support the preparation of empirical studies, for example by preparing stimulus materials and building online questionnaires.
- Coding & Analysis: You code open-ended responses using a predefined coding scheme and support basic descriptive analyses.
What you have to offer
- Ongoing studies: You are currently enrolled in a study program in information systems, computer science, business administration with an IT focus, or a related field. An additional background in ethics or philosophy of technology is welcome.
- Basic knowledge of conceptual modeling: for example BPMN, UML, ER models, or Data-Flow Diagrams.
- Interest in Value-based Engineering, IEEE 7000, or related approaches to value-oriented system design. Prior knowledge is not required.
- Care in visual design work: Experience with vector graphics tools such as Inkscape, Illustrator, or draw.io is an advantage, as is familiarity with LaTeX.
- Language skills: Very good written and spoken English.
- Conceptual and structured thinking, and the ability to work independently.
